Samsung Alias 2

samsung alias 2 003 300x283 Samsung Alias 2The Samsung Alias 2 – recently launched by Verizon Wireless — doesn’t look all that remarkable at first glance. It’s a flip phone with a full physical keyboard, a two megapixel camera, GPS navigation, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

Look a little closer though, and you’ll find an innovative e-ink keyboard that changes to suit your needs, all contained in a small, lightweight package that won’t weigh you down.

Nokia E71x (AT&T)

att nokia e71x phone 3 300x274 Nokia E71x (AT&T)At $149.99 with a two-year contract, the Nokia E71x is AT&T’s best smartphone deal right now. A variant on the Editors’ Choice–winning unlocked E71, this handset is strikingly slim, classy-looking phone with excellent e-mail and Web support—all at half the price of competing handsets. AT&T subscribers looking for a phone that can act as a mobile office can’t go wrong with this Nokia.

The talented and attractive E71 is one of the phones I carry with me most often. It’s super-slim (only 0.4 inch thick) and incredibly slick, with a stainless-steel back and small, domed keys. The phone’s voice performance is superb; it feels fast; and it runs thousands of Symbian programs. It also syncs easily with your PC. AT&T’s version uses the same hardware (except that it’s black, whereas the E71 is silver), but makes some firmware and software changes, which I’ll focus on in this review. For more details, check out the E71 review.

HTC Magic

HTC Magic 235x300 HTC MagicThe HTC Magic will be the second smartphone running Google’s Android to be released by a major carrier. This model will strongly resemble its predecessor, but lack the T-Mobile G1′s hardware keyboard.

First Impressions
I’ll confess, the Magic surprised me with how slim it is. It looks so much like the T-Mobile G1 (AKA HTC Dream) that I subconsciously expected it to be thicker. As soon as I picked it up I turned it sideways to see where the missing quarter of an inch had gone.

I’m pleased with the new design, but I hope HTC left room for a big enough battery. The G1 can barely get me through a day without a recharge, and I’m hoping the Dream will be an improvement in this area.
