BlackBerry Storm 2

blackberry storm 2 300x300 BlackBerry Storm 2With its large and crisp touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, sleek form factor, and a host of connectivity options, the BlackBerry Storm2 should be great. It packs upgraded performance, a tweaked user interface, enhanced operating system, and overall really works to make up for its previous generation’s shortcomings. It even includes Wi-Fi, a first for Verizon-branded Storms.

Despite all of this, the end product is somehow lacking. The Storm2 makes up for its predecessor’s shortcomings, but given the competition of large, touchscreen-based smartphones on Verizon, and the hordes of apps available for its prime target competitor, it’s hard to give this BlackBerry a solid recommendation.

Nokia N900

nokia n900 Nokia N900The Nokia N900 will be the first in a new series of devices from this company. Its design isn’t radically new, but this will be the smartphone running Maemo, an open source operating system based on Linux.

First Impressions
I was a long-time user of an earlier Maemo-based device, the Nokia N810, and I was surprised by how different the N900 will be from its predecessor. Fortunately, most of these changes seem to be improvements.

There’s no doubt what the biggest change will be: the N900 will be the first in this series to be a phone. The earlier models – N810, N800, etc. — were handheld computers without cellular-wireless capabilities. This one change leads to many of the others.

radeon5750 300x224 ATI Radeon HD 5750 brings HDMI bliss to HTPCs for $110We knew that video cards that could bitstream all the latest HD codecs wouldn’t always cost $380, but we certainly didn’t expect a cheaper alternative in two weeks. Of course price and HDMI audio capabilities aren’t the only factors when choosing a video card for your HTPC, so you might want to keep waiting — you know another few weeks — for a version that doesn’t take up two of your card slots for a fan that is no doubt anything but quiet. Anandtech is predicting you might have to wait another year for the perfect HTPC video card in the way of the 5600 series.
