Modu modular mobile phone company is set to make some serious splashes in the mobile phone industry. This device is touted to the world’s first modular mobile phone that can be easily customized to fit the specific needs of consumers. All you need to do is pop up the Modu a modu jacket or pair of Modu mate, and you’ve got yourself a brand new device. If they hype around the concept was not enough, just this week the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that the Modu is actually the world’s smallest and lightest mobile phone today.

smallest cell phone

So this is the core, you are essentially stuck with the most basic mobile phone I’ve ever seen. But attach the Modu mates, and there’s a whole other unit. Some modu mates that have been confirmed so far is MP4 players, digital picture frames, cameras and DECT phones. The possibilities are endless, and essentially it does not seem like the Modu is seeking to close the door to new partnership, which will modu mates.

smallest cell phone

And if style is more your thing, companies like Universal Music Group lined design modu jackets, which converts the various core Modu phone looks and feels. Where the traditional phone covers and plates were their limits, simplicity of design and the Modu is making it easy for each modu jacket to the impression that this is a totally unique and different phones.

smallest cell phone

But the problem lies in the basic design. The Modu may be the world’s smallest and lightest mobile phone, but without anything on it, you’d probably have passed if the mall kiosk creepy guys, so if it is free. Furthermore, the modular concept is great and all, but if the price is not nice and low, the overall sales structure will keep the phone is not exactly your own. Each modu mates that have been confirmed so far, which is very much cared for phones, like my father, for example.

smallest cell phone

But what’s that you say? The phone can not be converted to a digital picture frame? It’s called the setting that the phone will not turn off the screen and the slide show from your photos! In addition to the module, the rest seems pretty neat so I lay them down, and I have to admit, the Modu jacket design is really very good, but it could end up being a gimmick that just does not make sense if you could buy either HTC or Nokia smartphones, and there is a small tool that will do all the Modu is not, and then some.

smallest cell phone

Modu starts to conquer the world campaign for first time in Europe, but this is expected to make its way through the States towards the end of the year or early next year. Expect a review of the device, if I can handle my hands on one.

Samsung Galaxy S vs. Nokia N8

Last year really was a landmark year for smartphones. These high end phones have been around for a few years now and we are finally starting to see the effects of technological research in areas such as multimedia as smart mobile phones become almost as powerful as small computers. The launch of ground breaking phones such as the HTC Desire and the iPhone 4 have set the bar for the releases in 2011 but there were other good phones as well.
Two other phones really got tongues wagging last year as well, with huge sales and impressive reviews from the critics as well. These phones were the Samsung Galaxy S and the Nokia N8, releases from two of the world’s top mobile phone companies that were looking to return to the top of the pile and made massive steps towards this with these two handsets. Which is better though? Let’s take a look…

Browser

A very important aspect of the smartphone world now and something that can make or break a phone ,which is why Nokia should be so disappointed with their work on this browser. Although this browser is far better than previous Symbian efforts and you should not have to download a new one, it is nowhere near as good as the excellent Android effort that has been created for the Galaxy S. It runs very fast and complements the large screen well.

Camera

This is another simple one to judge as the Nokia effort really wipes the floor with the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S. The phone on the Galaxy S is by no means poor, it has 5 mega pixels, an autofocus and a Xenon flash so if you just like to take the odd snap then it is perfectly fine. The camera on the N8 is more than perfectly fine though, with a 12 megapixel camera it can keep up – and beat some of – many of the cheap digital cameras on the market so it really is one of the best camera phones around.

It runs Symbian^1 operating system and offers a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 32 GB of internal storage, 5 megapixel camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a GPS receiver.

This device is sold unlocked, directly to the public, for $455.

After living with the X6 for more than a month, I’ve become a fan of the changes that have been made in the software, and the overall strategy that Nokia seems to be employing with these devices.

BUILD & DESIGN

The Nokia X6 is a mono-block or candybar type design. Its 3.2-inch capacitive Touchscreen is flanked by sensors and buttons which are the same color as the body (black), giving it a slightly angular, if not almost futuristic, appearance. Compared to similar devices such as the Google Nexus One or iPhone 3GS, the Nokia carries a stronger design language and looks less like its trying to follow the crowd design-wise.

Compared to the 5800 XM, the X6 is more angular (has a more Nokian feel to it). The weight in hand is excellent and aside from the lack of texture on the sides, is otherwise pretty stable in hand. It seems to have been designed for pockets, as the thin and not-as-plump design slides hidden very well. And at the same time, its understated enough not to attract attention except from those who recognize a bit of the European flair in the design (that kind of feeling you get when after seeing a row of Hondas a BMW sticks out).

The Screen
The X6 is the first Nokia device to use a capacitive screen. At 3.2-inches diagonally, it’s not the largest of screens, but uses the 360×640 pixel resolution of Symbian^1 well.

Compared to my N97 (3.5-inch transflective and resistive screen), colors are sharper and more vivid in the red side of the spectrum. Responsiveness to touch is about the same, with the X6 showing more of a tendency to have ghosting moments — just hover the screen and an action will happen.

In everyday use, however, the screen makes the biggest difference in typing. The X6 has both portrait and landscape input methods, and where the 5800 XM felt better in the landscape mode, the X6 seems to excel best in portrait (with predictive text turned on). The speed at which it captures and refreshes text is just much better than on the resistive screens.

This does show up as a negative in browsing or when doing finer actions such as multiple selections. Part of this is due to the OS not really being designed for the touchscreen.

Buttons and Controls
The front of the Nokia X6 dominated by the aforementioned screen, with a multimedia menu button at the top right (same as the 5800 XM). Below the display are three buttons for Call, Menu/Home, and End. The Menu button can be configured to “breathe,” showing itself “alive” whenever a missed call, new message, or alarm has activated. There is also a front-facing camera which supports video calls for those services that have this ability.

The left side of the device has only a covered slot for the SIM card. The right side of the X6 has the volume up/down, screen/device lock toggle, and camera buttons. These buttons carry on the same thin yet quite usable motif found around the rest of the device.

The top of the X6 is the most crowded, featuring the power on/off button, 3.5 mm a/v port, 2 mm power port and micro-USB connector. Unfortunately, the X6 isn’t able to charge via micro-USB (big omission).

The rear is simply a (very bendable) plastic panel covering the 1320 mAh battery and housing a window for the 5 megapixel, dual-LED camera to poke out. If you are the type to swap SIM cards often, you’ll grow used to bending the rear panel off — otherwise its a bit disconcerting compared to the solid feel of the rest of the device.

PERFORMANCE

The Nokia X6 runs on the Symbian^1 operating system and platform. S^1 was formerly named Symbian S60 5th Edition, and serves as the first application of Touchscreen elements in the S60 branch of the Symbian platform. Thankfully, the X6 is not the first use of this OS on a Nokia device, and there has been a number of lessons learned (and some forgotten) in this implementation.

The hardware of the X6 gives this smartphone a few notches in its favor right off the bat: more program memory (over 270 MB free after booting) and a faster processor (clocked at 600 MHz). This allows the X6 to be one of the faster devices running S^1, but at the same time, faster doesn’t always mean better.

Until a recent firmware update, for instance, the X6 was a very bad manager of of its RAM. So, while it had tons of space to store applications, it (like the N97) had very little space to actually run them (less than 50 MB on boot). So, run a few heavier applications such as Ovi Maps and Nokia Messaging, and you will be hard pressed to even take a phone call without one of those apps shutting down on you. This has been remedied in part with the V20 update, but there is still only so much software can do to fix not enough headroom with hardware.

Thankfully, this is the only glaring weakness for the X6. Much like Nokia’s other S^1 devices, newer firmware updates have improved the general use and consistency of the operating system. Features such as kinetic scrolling, better utilization of network resources for better battery life, and even tweaks in the UI makes the X6 very much the livable device.

Wireless
As with other Symbian devices, phone signal and voice quality are excellent. I swap between a Truphone (using T-Mobile’s network) and AT&T SIM card and have no issues with the delivery of messages or call clarity. Depending on your region, these results could waver a bit.

Because the X6 is sold unlocked, it can be used with an array of carriers, as long as they use the GSM standard.

This model backs up its 3G support with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The version I bought even came with a set of Nokia BH- 214 Bluetooth Stereo headphones — an unexpected find in the box.

Productivity
The Symbian platform has long been lauded for its solid phone-oriented features, and the Nokia X6 continues that legacy unchangingly. The key improvement in the phone interface is in the addition of the contacts carousel, which appears on the homescreen.

This carousel allows you to put up to 20 persons there for quick access. Clicking the avatar/photo of the person, you are given a menu of quick actions (voice call, send SMS/MMS, read RSS feed, or configure mini-card details) and a log of recent activities to that specific contact. It can seem like a little things, but if you have a core set of people you contact, then this carousel works great.

The other PIM functions are basically unchanged. With the only exception being the addition of kinetic scrolling throughout. One note, unlike the n97 (and a few other S^1 devices), when scrolling the contacts list, you don’t get the neat letter pop-up indicating where you are in the list. Typing is context-sensitive within Contacts, but takes a good bit longer than scrolling.

The X6 also comes with File Manager, a link to the online service Files on Ovi, number converter, Real Player, and a few games. Additional applications can be installed from the Ovi Store application (included in the latest firmware, or it can be manually downloaded).

In use, the X6 is similar to other Symbian devices in everything except the loudspeaker – its clear, loud, and really nice. There’s nothing that really stands out in its productivity software, and then again, the X6 really does fit in very well, just as it does in the hardware and design.

Entertainment
The Nokia X6 is a music-focused device and its here that it shines the best. When it comes to access the Web, it’s OK, even competent, but again, nothing that stands out.

The music application is the same standard Symbian Music Player that has graced many devices over the years. This iteration of the app includes the RDS Radio, Podcasting, Recorder, and Playlist DJ apps, and a stub to the Ovi Music store for purchasing music. The X6 as sold in the U.S. isn’t a Comes with Music device, though you can select to either sideload music from the Ovi Store (supported markets only), iTunes, or any other music store right to the device.

Because the bulk of my music is stored on my N97 — and the X6 lacks a memory card to efficiently transfer music from one device to another in absence of a PC — I use the music streaming application Mobbler and have found both the sound quality and battery life to be more than sufficient for leisurely listening or workout sessions, even with the included Bluetooth headphones.

Still, the X6 offers plenty of storage space for those who want to keep their files locally: 16 GB.

This Nokia model is not able to take advantage of the homescreen widgets, as the N97 and n97 Mini can. It has widgets for contacts, applications, and the Music Player (this one only shows when music is playing from the default player only). Widgets are pretty much just lighter applications in the context of the X6.

An application that is definitely not lighter, and does show some promise is Ovi Maps. Recently updated to version 3.04, Ovi Maps is almost like another world inside of the X6. GPS locks are fast, and there has been some improvements in the POI databases used — it’s not as good as Google, but much better since the X6′s launch. The additional applications for Lonely Planet and Michelin are neat – when there’s content to be displayed for where you are or are traveling. And unlike the N97, it doesn’t randomly shut down as often due to the RAM issues.

A couple of other applications that I use on the X6 fairly often are SportsTracker, and Quickoffice Viewer. These and other applications are available in the Ovi Store.

So again, it’s a very capable device, — and without needing too many additional applications to be so — which does surprise some folks. But in that respect, the X6 is much like the rest of Nokia’s lineup: functional to a point, and working on getting prettier while doing that work.

Internet
This Nokia smartphone comes with Messaging, an app that supports SMS, MMS, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and several POP/IMAP email accounts. I actually prefer Nokia Messaging Email, which replaces the Messaging app and supports HTML messages and in most cases is just a faster, better, and easier way to do email.

The X6′s web browser is largely unchanged from other S^1 devices. This is based on Webkit (similar to the iPhone, Android, and webOS browsers) which is very good, but it has not seen a major user interface change in some time. There has been some performance improvements with the latest firmware update, boosting speed in JavaScript processing, page loading, and an updated FlashLite plug-in (version 3.1).

I don’t fine it terribly easy or hard to do browsing on the X6, it’s just tedious. For example, there’s a page overview mode, but because of how sensitive the capacitive screen is, it’s difficult to use that to zoom around a page — in addition to it taking three taps just to initiate that mode.

This is probably the area of the X6 that gets the lowest marks in my book. Thankfully, many popular websites do have widgets or full applications, which allow you to bypass the web browser for some tasks.

Camera
The X6 sports a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. We see the same dual-LED approach which grants better low-light and video taking, and a much faster processing time between taking pictures due to the use of 16 GB of internal (non-removable) memory.

As with other Nokia products over the years that have had this lens, the auto-focus works best on non-moving and well-defined objects. Though I can say that the quality of the X6 is what made me retire my N95 finally. Photos and videos both are definitely an upgrade despite essentially the same tech used (two plus years apart).

The camera software also supports geotagging and the sending of photos and videos to Ovi Share, other photoblogging services, and even other contacts.

Battery Life
The battery gives about 1 day of moderate use with the AT&T SIM, 2.5 days with the Truphone SIM – this is the North American 3G model, supporting AT&T’s 3G bands, hence the difference in use times.

When listening to music, it will last me 3.5 hors before a low battery warning.

CONCLUSION

I can recommend the Nokia X6, especially for those who are comfortable with the Nokia/Symbian family of devices, looking for an upgrade over the N95, N79, or 5800 XM with a little more ummph. The performance, even compared to my N97, is really sweet to behold.

It’s not the beefiest of devices, though. It might even be right to call the X6 a low-end smartphone — it feels much more comfortable playing music and doing light communications than replacing one’s netbook or being an email station. Yes, it can do that, but it’s not where the X6 excels.

I initially had qualms about the build quality, but after a month+ with it, it feels no different than my N95 or N97 after about the same amount of time. The battery cover being so bendable is something that takes getting used to, though.

Thing is, if you are looking for a mobile that stands out as much as it’s functional, the X6 is not really it. It slides into what you want it to do, and just kind of stays out of the way. Yes, browsing can be a bit of a challenge, and if you press it too hard with too many heavy apps, you will see it slow to a near halt, but in most cases, it just works and works well.

I’d have no problem recommending the X6 to someone who wants AT&T 3G use, but it doesn’t offer the cachet of the Nexus One/iPhone/HTC side of the discussion. In price and ability, its pretty much spot on with its competition — and if you can spare time for digging through the menus for things like the built-in voice commands, OTA software updater, or Ovi Sync — it’s probably a slightly better value.

For me, the Nokia X6 has found itself as the home to my second SIM, and usually finds its way into my pocket throughout the day. That says a lot for a mobile to push its way in there, and then slide away until its needed. But that’s the X6, and well, it does well in doing just that.

Pros

Feels great in hand

Excellent battery life

Easy to use contacts carousel
