The handset sits at the cutting-edge of what is currently available in the way of smartphone technology; this helps to account for the impressively quick pre-order figures that Samsung have reported – over 10,000 pre-orders were placed within the first 29 minutes of the new handset appearing on the Korean telecom website. While the country’s largest carrier, SK Telecom, receive a staggering 160,000 pre-orders via their website.

Samsung say that they are very proud of their latest device and predict worldwide sales to reflect the product’s quality; they are targeting to make no less than 10 million unit sales during 2011 alone – if reached, this would equal the sales results for the company’s Galaxy S II predecessor, the I9000 Galaxy S, made during its debut year of retail.

The device features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, and has internal speculations that are among some of the most weighty that can be currently found on the smartphone market; the handset is due to be released in Europe later on in the year, with prices expected to sit somewhere slightly lower than those of its nearest competitors, such as the Apple iPhone and Blackberry Torch.

Samsung Galaxy S vs. Nokia N8

Samsung Galaxy S vs. Nokia N8 300x180 Samsung Galaxy S vs. Nokia N8
Samsung Galaxy S vs. Nokia N8

Last year really was a landmark year for smartphones. These high end phones have been around for a few years now and we are finally starting to see the effects of technological research in areas such as multimedia as smart mobile phones become almost as powerful as small computers. The launch of ground breaking phones such as the HTC Desire and the iPhone 4 have set the bar for the releases in 2011 but there were other good phones as well.
Two other phones really got tongues wagging last year as well, with huge sales and impressive reviews from the critics as well. These phones were the Samsung Galaxy S and the Nokia N8, releases from two of the world’s top mobile phone companies that were looking to return to the top of the pile and made massive steps towards this with these two handsets. Which is better though? Let’s take a look…

Browser

A very important aspect of the smartphone world now and something that can make or break a phone ,which is why Nokia should be so disappointed with their work on this browser. Although this browser is far better than previous Symbian efforts and you should not have to download a new one, it is nowhere near as good as the excellent Android effort that has been created for the Galaxy S. It runs very fast and complements the large screen well.

Camera

This is another simple one to judge as the Nokia effort really wipes the floor with the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S. The phone on the Galaxy S is by no means poor, it has 5 mega pixels, an autofocus and a Xenon flash so if you just like to take the odd snap then it is perfectly fine. The camera on the N8 is more than perfectly fine though, with a 12 megapixel camera it can keep up – and beat some of – many of the cheap digital cameras on the market so it really is one of the best camera phones around.

Samsung Galaxy S

The new Samsung Galaxy S is not the phone if you are in the mood for buying a new business phone. However, it is the perfect phone for you if you are in the mood for purchasing a new phone that guarantees you the ultimate in mobile phone entertainment. This is because apart from having a 4 inch touch screen display that is the latest you can get in a mobile phone, it has a lot of features going its way that let it stand out from the crowd of high-end smart phones, which has burgeoned in size.

The new phone has a five megapixel camera to go with the brilliant 4 inch touch screen display that would immediately captivate your senses once you look at it. The new phone manages to incorporate practically all wireless connectivity technologies that you can think of. The list starts with the amazing DLNA connectivity feature and it goes on to the 3G and Wi-Fi features, which are considered to be standard for high-end smart phones these days. However, the DLNA connectivity option makes this phone stand out from the crowd since it is not normal for a phone in this recent to be having such a connectivity feature that is largely considered as very high end.

Apart from the usual wireless connectivity features that let you connect with Internet and other aspects of wireless connectivity, the phone also has Bluetooth and micro-USB are connecting this phone to various other electronic gadgets like computers or even other phones, which might be needed in case of actions like file transferring and so on. You get the latest Bluetooth version 3.0 with the phone and this means that you can get faster data transfer rates. The phone retails for around £ 415 in the UK. The Galaxy S has also been the main inspiration for the new Samsung manufactured Nexus S which has just been released in the UK.

Samsung Fascinate

samsung fascinate Samsung FascinateBUILD & DESIGN

The Samsung Fascinate seems to have been at first confused for an Apple iPhone, but then turned around so that it offers an exciting opinion that it is very much not an iPhone.

Overall, there’s no creak or bend to the Fascinate. But I have this weird feeling that it might be a bit too slick. Many times after sliding it into my pocket, I flat out forgot that it was there. Some other people that I asked about it expressed similar concerns, but were overall impressed with the weight and design.

Screen
As with many smartphones these days, everything starts with the screen, and the Fascinate doesn’t disappoint. The 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display is bright and clear in most situations, taking solid advantage of the Super AMOLED screen technology which is both thinner and gives off some truer blacks than other types of screens.

I did notice though that the default (and adjusted) brightness levels were noticeably lower than that of the Epic 4G (the Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy S). I’m not exactly sure if this is a manufacturing issue, or a conscious decision on Verizon’s part in order to eek out a bit more life from the Fascinate

An improvement seems to have been made with the screen’s refresh rate, though. With other Galaxy variants, I noticed just a little bit in the way of screen lag with gestures, but not so with the Fascinate. And there was even a bit of an improvement after a recent system update in terms of how fast touches and gestures register.

The screen is not a fingerprint magnet. Most taps on the display are acknowledged by an audible “pop”, but you can turn this off if you wish.

Keyboard
As the Fascinate is a tablet-style smartphone, all input is done via the screen using either the landscape keyboard, portrait keyboard, or voice.

By default, the keyboard is set up to use the Swype input system. This works very well, and after using it with various Android OS and Symbian devices I’m finding it very easy to use for all but the most complicated of words.

The landscape keyboard is well spaced and easy to deal with for most input needs, but I find that it takes a lot of the screen real estate and I only use it when I needed longer phrases, or when Swype in portrait mode was becoming cumbersome in longer SMS/IM sessions.
