LG Dare

LG dare2 283x300 LG Dare

The LG Dare is a high-end phone from Verizon whose large touchscreen, easy to use music player, and highly-functional camera give it an emphasis on multimedia.

This model does many things surprisingly well. If you’re a consumer looking for an inexpensive, fully-featured mobile phone or a multimedia enthusiast, you should definitely take a closer look at the Dare. However, if you’re a die-hard road warrior, you probably need a Blackberry or a Windows Mobile smartphone.

Design and Hardware
The Dare is a tablet-style phone; I specifically chose it because I prefer that style to the flip design. Because there are no moving parts, the entire phone feels quite solid in the hand.

The large touchscreen dominates the front of the device, with three small buttons at the bottom for call, context-sensitive clear/voice command, and disconnect.

Samsung Saga

samsung saga Samsung Saga

The Samsung Saga is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone available from Verizon Wireless.

Its non-flip, single-piece design should have wide appeal to business and consumer users due to a vivid touchscreen, highly-usable keyboard, functional camera, and overall snappy performance.

And it has the extra bonus of being a “world phone,” allowing it to be used not just in the U.S. but when traveling in Europe, Australia, Asia, and more.

Design and Hardware

The Samsung Saga is nowhere near as elegant as the HTC S740 I recently reviewed, but it is both sleek and functional.

When I first handled the device, I was amazed by how light it is, at only 4.59 ounces — I figured at first that the battery must be lurking in the bottom of the box, but it was already installed. The main reason is that the phone is made almost entirely of plastic. That could set off warning bells for some consumers, but I found the device to be solid and well made. There is no flexing or creaking, and the device feels good in the hand. All of the edges and corners are slightly rounded for comfort.

BlackBerry Storm 9530

BlackBerry Storm 9530 BlackBerry Storm 9530The BlackBerry Storm, the first BlackBerry with a touchscreen, is now available exclusively in the U.S. from Verizon Wireless.

The Storm outperforms most BlackBerrys with its crisp, innovative touch-button screen. Boasting a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus still and video camera, the Storm impresses by packing numerous features into its sleek and sturdy form-factor.

There is a lot to like about this device, including its sharp display, an auto-focus 3.2 megapixel camera, and applications like Visual Voicemail, but there are still some glaring problems. Even after updating its operating system with Verizon’s new patch, there is still lag present in a lot of applications which hinders the phone’s functionality in many areas. And the lack of Wi-Fi and QWERTY keyboard, and unrelenting fingerprints detract from the innovative hardware.

There are issues that Verizon and RIM will be able to address via further firmware updates, but there are others (read: lack of Wi-Fi) that can only be incorporated into future Storm versions.
